CPL · Questions
What people ask before they switch.
How CPL behaves in the pit and in the office, what happens to your data, and how to get started.
The basics
What is CPL?
CPL is a production logging app for open-cast mining. It captures loads by the hour, machine hours, downtime and diesel, and turns them into the shift report, the daily tracker and the dashboards a site is run on. It replaces the paper logsheet and the spreadsheet behind it.
Who uses it?
Everyone between the pit and the boardroom. Tally clerks capture each hour. Shift supervisors watch the pace and approve the shift. Mine managers follow the day and the month against plan. Engineering sees availability, downtime and diesel. Each role opens on its own board.
Which devices does it run on?
Windows today, with Android, iPhone, iPad and macOS on the way. The buttons on this site become download links as each one arrives. It is the same app at every size, from a control-room monitor to a phone.
How do I get an account?
Your organisation’s administrator invites you by email. There is no sign-up in the app, because CPL is supplied to organisations and not to the public. If your site does not use CPL yet, talk to us.
What does it cost?
CPL is supplied under an agreement with your organisation. Tell us about your sites and we will give you a quote.
In the pit
Does it work without signal?
Yes. Every capture is saved on the device first and sent when a connection returns, so a dead zone delays the sync and never the work. The app shows whether it is synced or working offline.
Do we have to open and close shifts?
No. CPL works the shift out from the clock and the site: Day runs 06:00 to 18:00 and Night 18:00 to 06:00. A shift is started when the crew starts capturing, and closed out with the machines’ closing readings and a supervisor’s approval.
How is BCM worked out?
Each load counts for the BCM figure your site has set for that material and machine, so the clerk only counts loads. The shift’s target is the site’s rate multiplied by the shift’s productive hours and the loading units on the sheet.
What if an hour is missed, or a load is captured by mistake?
An hour with nothing recorded reads 0 by itself. A load can be taken off, and an earlier hour can be filled in afterwards; the record shows when it was entered and by whom. Once a shift is approved, changing it takes someone with the right to correct it.
Can several people capture the same shift?
Yes. Captures from different devices land on the same sheet, and when the devices are online each sees the other’s changes within moments.
What about machines that do not load or haul?
Dozers, graders, water trucks and other support machines are captured by their hour meters: an opening and a closing reading, and what the machine was doing. Downtime is logged against any machine, with its cause.
In the office
How soon do the figures reach the office?
As soon as the device in the pit has a connection. Dashboards and reports are built from the same captures, so nobody types the shift up afterwards.
What reports does it produce?
A shift report with production by hour, by material and by machine, downtime and diesel, which exports to PDF, Word or an image. An hourly report formatted to paste into WhatsApp. A daily machine report of hour meters. And the daily tracker of the month against plan.
Can we plan in CPL?
Yes. A month is planned by material and spread across its days, and each shift is then measured against it. Where no plan is filed, the shift is measured against what the site’s rate allows.
Who sets up our sites, fleet and people?
An administrator in your organisation, in the app’s Settings: sites and their shift hours and rates, the fleet by machine type, and people with their roles and sites.
Your data
Who can see our data?
Only the people your administrator invites, and each of them only the sites and functions their role allows. That is enforced in the database itself, not only on the screen.
Where is it kept?
A working copy is kept on each device so the app works offline, and it is synchronised over an encrypted connection to a cloud database we run for your organisation. The Privacy Policy sets out the detail.
Is there an audit trail?
Yes. Every figure keeps a history of who entered it, on which device, and who changed it afterwards. An approved shift is locked.
Does CPL track location or show adverts?
No. CPL does not read your location, contacts or photos, and it carries no advertising and no tracking.
What happens to our data if we stop using CPL?
It is your organisation’s data. When an agreement ends we return it or delete it on your instruction.
Updates and help
How does the app update?
On Windows, CPL checks for a new version by itself and installs it; the What’s new page says what changed. A release that every device must be on is required before the app can be used again, so that everyone works on the same version of the data.
How do we get help?
Email us or use the contact form on customeapps.com. Quote the app version and install ID from Settings, About this install, and we can find your device.
Still have a question?
Ask us about your own pit: your shifts, your fleet, the reports you send today.
